Members of the Olympia Fields Police Department have unanimously voted to leave their previous union and join Teamsters Local 700, a move officers say was driven by years of inadequate representation and a desire for stronger advocacy on their behalf. The decision marks a significant moment for the department's rank and file, who say they endured ongoing violations of department policies, their union contract, and their rights without meaningful recourse under their former union.
Officer Rhonda Jones spoke about the conditions that led to the change. "My brothers and sisters in blue were experiencing some very challenging times with our current administration," Jones said. "We felt powerless, hopeless, and exhausted by not receiving the representation that we needed." Despite those hardships, Jones said the officers refused to give up. "We came together and realized we needed change and a stronger union. We knew we deserved better because we are worth it."
Jones added: "We just want a better quality of life to help us serve the community we swore to protect. Victory is always possible for the person who refuses to stop fighting."
Sergeant Javonnie Royster echoed that optimism about the road ahead. "I'm glad that we are making this transition to the Teamsters and I'm very excited to start working with this organization to create a stronger union contract on behalf of the officers," Royster said.
Teamsters Local 700 President Ramon Williams welcomed the Olympia Fields officers with open arms. "We are proud to stand with the men and women of the Olympia Fields Police Department," Williams said. "These officers showed tremendous courage and solidarity in demanding the representation they deserve. Local 700 is committed to fighting alongside them every step of the way, at the bargaining table and beyond."
The Olympia Fields officers now join the 10,000 public service workers represented by Local 700 across the state of Illinois.
