CHICAGO – On Friday, May 21, 2021, Teamsters Local 700 and the Negotiation Committee, composed of rank-and-file members of the Cook County Clerk’s Office, were poised to meet with Clerk of Circuit Courts, Iris Y. Martinez, for negotiations.
The Teamsters arrived at 9:00 a.m. and prepared the Negotiations Committee for the bargaining session that was scheduled to begin. However, an hour later, the management and legal team from the Clerk’s Office arrived and demanded that we remove a Teamsters Union Representative from the negotiating room. Local 700 objected to this unsubstantiated request, and, thus, the Clerk’s Office flatly refused to begin negotiations.
Teamsters Local 700 has a current Unfair Labor Practice charge pending in response to the Clerk’s retaliatory actions. Moreover, Teamsters Local 700 is seeking legal action to compel the Clerk’s Office to negotiate with us. It is our position that the Clerk’s Office is violating the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act, which requires them to bargain in good faith.
This is the second time within a month that the negotiations have been canceled. We consider their continued use of intimidation, retaliation, and outright aggression to be an intolerable form of union busting.
President Ramon D. Williams recognizes that our Clerks are some of our hardest-working members in the County. “They have gone above and beyond, throughout the pandemic, continuing to provide unwavering service crucial to the upkeep of law and justice. It’s a dishonor that their employer doesn’t recognize their contribution; but an honor to have them within our ranks.”
An update will be forthcoming.
