Illinois Governor J.P. Pritzker signed House Bill 3653 into law on Monday afternoon, enacting so-called reforms to the criminal justice system which greatly hinder the ability of law enforcement officers to ensure public safety.
Though Teamsters Local 700 and its allies in the Illinois General Assembly were able to remove language restricting collective bargaining and qualified immunity, the bill Gov. Pritzker signed Monday hinders officers’ abilities to resolve conflicts, allows for anonymous complaints against officers and creates a statewide certification process for officers.
“Teamsters Local 700 remains opposed to the bill in its current form as some of the language harms our most dedicated public servants by making their difficult jobs even harder, and exposes them to unfair treatment in the workplace. We will continue to fight the implementation of HB 3653’s dangerous policies and work with elected officials to protect the rights of law enforcement officers,” said Teamsters Local 700 President Ramon D. Williams.
