Being a Motor Truck Driver (MTD) for the Department of Aviation at Midway is anything but boring. Their essential duties are crucial to the safety of passengers and workers on the ground as well as in the air. Safety always comes first. Drivers must know where exactly they are on the field, what they want to do, and where they want to go.
Tina Gaines has been a Driver since 2006 and greatly enjoys the job—she’s never been late and never missed a scheduled day. She’s formed many solid relationships with her co-workers, who she considers family. “I love my job and I’ve been blessed to have it. I love being on the airfield.”
Ms. Gaines started out as a Motor Pool Truck Driver. After extensive training and testing, she was able to drive on the field and communicate directly with the tower as an MTD. At first, she was nervous. “It is very intense,” she says. “The tower is intimidating. It’s like you’re speaking to the gods; they see the whole field. But I’ve grown, being here at the airport. Went from a Motor Pool Truck Driver to a Lead.”
Sister Gaines has been a Teamster for 14 years and a shining example of the job satisfaction that can be accomplished by working hard. We are very proud to have her as a member.
