Teamsters Local 700 members at the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center (JTDC) recently received back over 2500 hours of Sick Time after an arbitrator agreed with the Union that the employer was violating sections of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) protecting members’ FMLA rights.
The award ended the employer’s practice of forcing Local 700 members to use Sick Time first, in conjunction with their FMLA. Teamsters members at the JTDC can now choose to use any accrued time in conjunction with their FMLA, as outlined in the CBA.
In addition, the arbitrator awarded affected members with 2 to 16 hours of Sick Time as compensation for the employer’s blatant disregard of the CBA language. These 2500 hours, along with the 5000 hours of Comp Time awarded to Teamsters members in May, brings the value of benefit time awarded to the JTDC membership to well over $200,000.
“This is unprecedented,” said Local 700 President Ramon D. Williams. “With our talented legal team, we plan to make certain that the rights of our members are protected and that they receive all of the benefits afforded to them under the CBA.”
