Teamsters Cook County Clerks Intentionally Endangered by Cook County Clerks Office While Non-Union Workers Stay Home

Teamsters Local 700 is appalled and outraged at the fact that over 35 Teamsters with the Cook County Clerks have contracted Covid-19 and 3 have died from Covid-related complications–and still our members are forced to work with the public.

The Clerk’s Office denies the continued threat of this contagion when it comes to our members. While they demand our members not only work in office, they allow non-union employees to work from home. This is a clear attempt to intimidate and demoralize our members.

We condemn these strong-arm tactics, especially in light of the fact that the County has extended the Disaster Declaration until December. This is simply another way that the Cook County Clerks Office has flagrantly dismissed the safety of our members after recent demands for better access to PPE and better safety protocols for members who deal with the public. These members have displayed consummate professionalism in clearing the backlog of cases at the rise at the expense of their own health.

“These essential workers have received none of the glory that law enforcement or healthcare professionals receive despite their exposure to multiple vectors daily.” Said Local 700 Vice President Anthony McGee. “This clear favoritism of non-union clerk staff is a slap in the face of common decency and we will fight it with every tool in our arsenal.”

Covid-19 is predicted to return with a vengeance this Autumn and the Teamsters will continue to pressure Cook County until our members’ rights and dignity are respected.
