JTDC Conducts Unjust Disciplinary Meetings

The Juvenile Temporary Detention Center (JTDC) has indicated that there may be up to 60 pre-disciplinary meetings to be served and scheduled starting the week of September 14th, 2020. The Union considers it unethical for the JTDC to issue any unjust and untimely discipline during this pandemic.

Local 700 Business Agent Rosalind Tennent and her team have been present at the service of discipline to members since August 31st. They have observed that a large sampling of the discipline is for attendance-related matters. In these instances, members were not provided with adequate notice and were therefore deprived of the action being corrective rather than punitive. JTDC had gathered alleged infractions that occurred from March 2020 to August 2020 and lumped each occurrence into one action. In essence, they had piled on the alleged violations into one huge charge. This serves as a violation of the CBA. The most alarming element is the untimely way the JTDC is issuing these notices. Some are literally over six months old.

JTDC members are essential employees and have proven themselves time and time again, no more than during this pandemic. Local 700 believes that it is highly inappropriate for the JTDC to potentially discipline members who have been showing up at work throughout the pandemic while they, themselves, are safe at home.

Local 700 encourages members to contact a Steward ASAP if they are served with a notice of discipline. This will ensure that there will be a witness to the proceedings. Also, be sure you receive a full and complete copy of the notice.

Stay strong. Stay safe. Stay united.
