The brutal attack against multiple Cook County Department of Corrections (CCDOC) officers that happened this week exposed the perpetually dangerous working conditions that they are faced with every day.
For years, Teamsters Local 700 has been fighting with the Sheriff to provide a safe and secure environment for our members in order to rectify the ongoing violence against officers. This incident represents a very small fraction of the collective assaults and attacks committed against officers while they were simply doing their job. These officers are trained professionals and serve with dignity at a job that most others would not want to walk into.
“This situation proves that within seconds, a vicious and unprovoked attack can occur against any of our members,” said Teamsters Local 700 President Ramon D. Williams. “It reminds us of how unpredictable and dangerous the job of these correctional officers is to begin with, and now on top of that, these officers are trying to stay safe against the spread of COVID-19. It is a very stressful, almost unbearable time for anyone working at the CCDOC and we commend these men and women for continuing to do their job through these horrible conditions. They are truly heroes within this crisis and they deserved to be recognized as such.”
