Teamsters Local 700 Files Unfair Labor Practice Against Village of Stone Park

ULP filed after Village & Fire Chief’s attempt to block employees from joining the Union

Teamsters Local 700 has filed an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) with the Illinois Labor Relations Board (ILRB) against the Village of Stone Park and the Stone Park Fire Department for violating the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act by attempting to block unionization of the Fire Department employees. The ULP names the Village, the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief and the Mayor all in violation of the Act when adverse actions were taken against the employees of the Stone Park Fire Department after Local 700 filed a majority interest petition for union representation.

On Dec. 2, 2019, the Stone Park Fire Department issued a memo from the Deputy Chief that the department was now accepting applications for firefighters/paramedics. The ILRB petition for Teamster representation of the current employees was filed on Dec. 5, 2019. The Chief sent out another memo on Dec. 18, 2019 notifying the current firefighters and paramedics that starting in January, their work would be outsourced to the Melrose Park Fire Department due to the best interests of the taxpayers of Stone Park.

“This was a clear attempt by the Village and the Fire Chief to obstruct the Union from entering Stone Park and talking to their employees,” said Teamsters Local 700 President Michael G. Melone. “They have unquestionably violated the law and Local 700 will prevail in this fight and be able to represent the firefighters as such. The Union isn’t going away.”
