The Local 700 members of the Cook County Bureau of Administration Printing & Graphic Services are officially recognized by the Teamsters Graphic Communications Conference (GCC) as a certified Teamster print shop and have been assigned a new union bug. These members provide graphic design and printing services to all departments and agencies of Cook County government.
The group joined Local 700 in 2018 and is part of the GCC, which represents more than 60,000 Teamsters in the printing and publishing industry.
When printed materials are union-made, they are labeled with an official union “bug” on the bottom of a cover page or underneath a logo. It is illegal for businesses to use the union bug if they are not truly union printers. The practice started when printing expanded in the 19th century. The union bug signifies quality and good workmanship and is a prestigious badge put on printed products to display their union origin.
Mary Sheeran, the steward for the bargaining unit, said she is proud to be part of such a legendary and strong union.
“I am so proud to be part of the Teamsters organization and that our print house is now represented by Teamsters Local 700,” said Mary. “From the beginning, the Teamsters have been so supportive of all of us and what we do. Now, with our own union bug, our Teamster pride will be displayed on everything we print for the County.”
“This is the first group of members to join Local 700 that are also part of the Teamsters Graphic Communications Conference,” said Teamsters Local 700 President Michael G. Melone. “We are honored to serve such a diverse membership that produces key services within our cities, counties and state, and this group is a welcomed addition into the Local 700 family.”
