In January 2019, the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board issued a complaint of bad faith bargaining against the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) after a $200 ratification bonus was given to members of SEIU but not to members of Teamsters Local 700 during their previous contract ratification. Local 700 represents nearly 100 members at UIC, and SEIU also represents workers at the university.
After learning about the bonus discrepancy that violated the “Me Too” clause, Local 700 also filed an Unfair Labor Practice against UIC on behalf of the members. The Board had set a hearing for the end of March, but UIC agreed to settle the case and give Local 700 members the $200 bonus. The agreement was signed in late May and members received their bonuses as of last week.
“No matter how big or small the case we are fighting for, Teamsters Local 700 will never give up when it comes to making things right for our members,” said Local 700 President Michael G. Melone.
