David Schwarz, a 25-year employee of the Illinois Tollway and Teamsters Local 700 member, was killed last fall after he was a victim of a hit-and-run by a semi-trailer while working on I-294 near Alsip. David was out of his vehicle collecting debris on the shoulder with another Tollway worker when the semi hit him and did not stop. Police apprehended the Ohio truck driver months later and he was sentenced with reckless homicide.
David’s family is asking all drivers to take a safe driving pledge in memory of David and so many others that have fallen victim to these horrific tragedies on the road. The pledge calls for motorists to move over and give roadway workers, everyday drivers and emergency personnel enough distance to keep everyone safe.
