SB1313 Passes House and Senate, Local 700 Stays Vehemently Opposed
Along with many other labor unions, Local 700 has been vehemently opposed to SB 1313, which
rapidly passed both the House and Senate the week of May 7. The bill now goes to Gov. Quinn.
The bill applies to all active retirees and will allow Central Management Services to negotiate
premium rates annually. Legislators advocated the bill as a way to save on costs of subsidizing health insurance for retirees. Currently, many retirees in the state systems pay nothing.
The legislation will also give CMS the authority to consider certain factors in determining rates,
including Medicare status, income and length of service.
"Despite the fact that this bill passed the House and Senate, Teamsters Local 700 will continue to
oppose SB1313," said Becky Strzechowski, Local 700 Secretary-Treasurer.
